I took in two stray females a couple of months back. One went on to have 3 kittens (the other one not pregnant, whew!). The little ones are now 3.5 weeks old and one of them is a wobbly kitten. I think there is also some vision impairment. The vet says the prospects are poor but I know that wobbly cats can live a long time.

Coordination wise, this kitten is very poor. And the vision problem as well.

My question is: at what age can I make a reasonable assessment of this guys capabilities? I don't want to put it down just yet because I want to see if I can find a home for it.

I can't answer the question about a wobbly kitten because I don't have any experience in that area, but I certainly can address the issue of vision impairment. I adopted Duffy (a blind cat, approximately 5 years old) on Feb. 1 of this year. He is remarkable. He does almost everything that a sighted can can do except run 'flat out' (but he does move around well

I notice that there have been no responses to your question about the wobbly kitten. (Mine doesn't count because I could only comment on vision impairment.) I suggest that you post a message on rec.pets.cats.health+behav. That's a very active group.

I would take the wee thing to another vet (re: specialist) to get it assessed by someone more knowledgable. You can ask your original vet for a referral. You can then make a determination after the specialist gives it a thorough exam.

I figured that would be the first thing you would have thought of.
