I have several cats who are litter mates and several who are not related. The ones that are litter mates try to cover up what remains of their food when they are finished eating. The others don't. It seems to me that the instinct to cover what's left of the food may be stronger in some family lines than in others. Apparently the instinct is strong among your three youngest cats. The ones I have who like to try to cover their food will be 12 in May.

The oldest cat i have was 14 on April 1st just gone... I did have another cat from the same litter as her, but he died last year on June 30th, aged 13 years and 3 months.. The other 'old' cat i have was from the second litter of 1989, and he will be 14 in September. The mother of the kittens 'Pip', i think was born around Oct/nov 2000, She was originally owned by my sister's ex-boyfriend, and he can't remember exactly when she was born. There were only two in that litter. So pip is now about 2 1/2 years old. And in March 2002, Pip had 4 kittens. So, at one point i had 8 cats !... Unfortunatly i lost one of my old cats 'Ginge' to old age, three months after the kittens were born (One of the reasons i kept the kittens, as i knew he wasn't going to be with us much longer, and i don't know how much longer i'll have the other two 'old' cats for either) - and then in October 2002 i lost one of the kittens too, aged seven months - i don't know if she was hit by a car, or died of fright when some b**tard let off a load of fireworks at a party across the street, three weeks before the 'offical' guy fawkes/bonfire night come Halloween party weekend. So, i am down to 6 cats now.

We had a cat that sometimes did this. We thought she was making an editorial comment on the food, that it tasted like crap....
