hi i haven't posted lately, had some cancer surgery, but i find i need the expert advice of the board.

we have cats....lots of them, got 2 from my teenager when she moved out of state, so gaining more cats is something i don't do lightly. but we have this situation... we have one cat that was abandoned by mom that we bottle fed, named her pooper....learned to never name a cat something you don't want to yell out in public...anyway, she is a grey tabby, soft face, white fluf for chest. as i walked past our plum tree that grows in front and actually stretches across the roof, i saw her in tree. she would speak to me, but not come close. after a few days of this, i noticed they didn't look quite the same, but pooper is a talker, and this cat was talking. then came the day i talked to her in the tree, then had to move her from the bed to lay down, duh.... no way it could be the same cat. it wasn't. fake pooper (now known as hannah) is alot smaller, and soooo thin i could see her bone at the end of her spine!

i started feeding her but wanted to catch her so we could have her fixed, but here is the problem. i had started to feed her while she was in the tree, then held the can of dry food/mixed with meat up to her, then while i sat, she would come closer to eat. i slowly started to pet her head, or touch her while she ate. it has take weeks but i can now put the bowl on the porch, with me sitting there, and hold my hands out so that she has to step into the area, with my hands touching her sides, or lace my fingers and she will step over them so i can get her under her belly....but she is so skittish that she will take a couple pieces of food in her mouth, then jump back, eat, come back, do it all again.

i did manage to lift her once, and my best was when i was able to gather her up to me to stroke her... she was so startled, her beautiful eyes grew huge! i don't know who was more startled, me or her! she started to panic so i let her go. see, with the chemo and all, i reallllly don't need a bite or scratch i know she is feral and needs all her shots.

we talked of renting a cattrap from the pound, but i know i will end up catching any of the 10 that already hang here! any ideas? i think she is about 4-5 months, i scratched her at the base of her tail and she didn't get into position so i don't think she has entered heat.....oh, she lives on our roof....the ivy that covers the fence has grown around the chimny, and when i call out her name, we see her scramble out of the ivy, down the tree, and then down to the food. also, i have never had a cat this old that has been feral to try to tame down...are the chances good it will work or should i just concentrate on getting her fixed so we don't have baby kits on the roof too help

What do you have to lose by trying to tame her. Even if she never is a lap cat it would be a better life if you trap her and she gets her shots you have about 2 weeks before you can have her spayed If you have a room inside give her a chance Cindy

Don;t push it when she's ready she'll adopt you And you must trap her and get her fixed she doesn't bring more kitties. I live in Miami and the overpopulation here is overwhelming

As you are in California (per your aol profile), you shouldn't have any problem finding a vet/clinic who does early spay/neuter and spays ferals. Certainly if you are in the Los Angeles or San Francisco area, there are plenty. Check out www.feralcat.com (based in San Diego) for information that will help you.
