today my husband and i faced the reality of pet overpopulation in california. we live in orange county in a fairly nice apartment complex and this morning when i went to the post office i saw some people moving and a girl with a siamese cat. i didn't think anything of it, until tonight when the cat was in the lot and jumped into mike's arms. it was obviously not a stray or feral. it was a kitten and quite friendly. about 6 months old. well, we talked to residents who said it has been around for days. then we went to the office who said no one reported a lost cat. they also said we should put it back out in the busy parking lot. (obviously we didnt, i wouldn't be able to live with myself leaving a kitten out) we put her in the bathroom with a cat box, which she used. i ended up calling animal control and i am waiting to hear from the siamese rescue organization. i couldn't keep her as much as i wanted to. 2 cats are already alot in a one bedroom apartment. <sigh> how can people just leave a pet behind. (there were a lot of people moving this weekend) the animal control guy was really nice. he said he sees this too many times, but thought the kitty has a really good chance. we put ourselves as the third party for her. she's a *beautiful* cat. at the Orange County Animal Care Center, 714-935-6848 for anyone who's interested.

what an evening...

Just for future info... Try the Animal Assistance League. It's in Orange County, too. They will find homes for cats like the one you found.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but letting this cat go to a kill shelter is not a good deed. Animal Control is the last place anyone should think about taking a cat to, as their kill rate is generally 90% or higher. A 'good chance' is not a guarantee, and I don't understand why you couldn't have kept the kitten temporarily (2 cats in a one bedroom apartment is not a lot, and one more for a short time is not a big deal) until Siamese Rescue contacted you or you were able to find a friend to foster her, a no-kill rescue organization, etc. I also don't know what you mean by 'third party'. If it means that if this cat's time comes they'll contact you first? Well, from experience I can tell you that often this is overlooked as well, and many times cats are killed 'by mistake'. I hope you make a serious effort to find someone to adopt this cat fast, or go back and get her out of there and into a place where there is no chance she will be killed.

the third party means if no one claims her we get her. we aren't obligated to take her, but leaves a chance for 2 others (owner or someone else) to adopt her first. in the meantime i am trying to find a place that will foster her. we were in a pinch last night with no one being open. i really wanted to take her to my vet and get her checked out but my vet closes at 4 and we found her at 5. i am supposed to call tuesday and find out about an adoption date or if someone claimed her. in the meantime i am calling animal groups, etc. trying to find a no-kill organization. someone mentioned the animal protection league, but i have talked to them before and they have some pretty incompetent people who take calls. i also don't know if they are a 'no-kill' group.

i am. i also have to face the reality that i cannot keep her myself. if i didn't care i would have left her to get hit by a car in our busy lot, like the management suggested.

we need more caring people in this world like you! I would take the kitten for you if I could. (I live in Florida) Best of luck!
