One of my neighbors has a cat who recently had kittens (about 3 weeks old). My husband and I just came home, and mommy cat is outside, crying plaintively. I expect the kittens are inside. No one is home. I tried every number I can think of to reach my neighbor-nothing. I tried the humane society and animal control, and both are closed. The police won't break into the house for this situation.

I don't know how long mama has been out there. I can feed her, but can anyone think of anything I might be able to do (short of taking a hammer to a window) to get mama back with the kittens? How long can 3 week old kittens survive without mama, anyway?

Oh NO! Make sure mama doesn't hurt herself if you can. Sophie, when the door blew closed with her kittens on the other side, threw herself against the door until her nose bled.

This drives me nuts! There is a cat in the building next door whom the people let out and then leave. So there is the cat yelling its head off to get in and no one to let it! This cat has the loudest most plaintive yell I've ever heard. Please let us know if the neighbors get home pronto. This too will bother me tonight if I don't hear. Do they have an open window somewhere you could sneak her in?

Donna - is everything OK with your neighbor's mama kitty and kittens?

Mama found her own way in!-DH and I went over about 9:00 last night to look for an open window, and found that the back window (which had been slightly cracked, but screened-and which we had planned to force if needed) had already been widened-and there was a clawed hole in the screen. I assume that mama made it in to the kittens. Since no one is home yet, I've been putting food outside mama's homemade cat door, and she seems to be finding it.

I don't know about the kittens. I stalled as long as I felt it would be safe-I don't know how long Mama stalled!

that's just awful that they've been gone so long - even in an emerg I would think to go home and check on her. The kittens would surely be near death by now, if not already gone. Perhaps you could let your neighbors know (nicely since you have to live there) what they've almost done? I know the Humane Society here would be very interested in something like that - no food, shelter or water provided for the poor puss. I had to call them once for a neighbor whose kitten fell off of her 4th floor balcony - she hadn't been home for a week or more before that. They came that day and had the landlord open the door. Turns out the girl had left *tons* of food and water bowls, and left the door open a crack so the kitties could come in and out - but I was surprised they came so quickly. Thanks for the good ending - I was worried all night for her & her babies.
