Yes, each and every time I place a rescued cat I miss them. My niece, who was 25 at the time, fostered a pregnant cat for our local shelter. When it was time to send mama back to the shelter and a few weeks later the babies my niece was devastated. She even said she would never foster cats again. I reminded her that her original intention was to help the mama cat and her kittens. I told her she gave the cats she fostered something no one else could give them... some of her own unique love and care. With the cats I rescue I often tell people that if I only kept the cute ones, or the special ones I would have kept them all because they are all cute and special.
Finding homes for rescued cats is difficult but fate also plays a part. My role is to locate the rescued cat's 'real' home. A couple of years ago I rescued 3 kittens within one week. All 3 were sick. When I found the 3rd cat (#20 rescued cat) a friend was with me. She asked me how I could take in another cat right now. I told her it was fate and besides, which kitten would I have said no to? It is a fine balancing act between doing all you can do for something you believe in and taking on more than you can handle. Keeping every cat yourself most likely wouldn't benefit any of the cats at all. Instead of looking at your situation as having to draw the line somewhere I think what you understand in your heart is that you helped the beautiful long haired gray cat by finding her real home for her. You are able to put your own feelings in second place and what is best for the cat first. You gave this cat real love and kindness. You really rescued her.

Thanks for that perspective. Yes I do think it was fate that it all came about at the same time I knew about this family just at the time they were ready for another cat.
