Spayed while pregnant? What does this mean, were the babies killed in the process? I've never heard of this, is it a common thing to do?

basically the kittens were aborted. i cant speak on how common this is but this cat was early on in her pregnancy and homeless so i made the decision not to add to the problem.

If a human female miscarries or aborts within the last few months of pregnancy, her body will still attempt to produce milk-there is an injection which will block the hormones and dry up production. I guess this cat was just far enough along for her body to do this. You might want to ask your vet if there's anything that can be given to stop production, to ease the poor animal's pain while the antibiotics are working (since mastitis is an infection of the milk ducts, she's probably really hurting, and if she's producing milk without kittens to nurse, the pressure is going to build up-especially since I don't think you can milk a cat by hand!)

Ok, that makes sense, though a hard decision to make. I was trying to figure out how they could spay her and still continue the pregnancy, couldn't get my mind around it.

Since the pregnancy had already begun, I suppose it's possible that whatever controls the milk process wasn't stopped by the surgery. I would suggest a quick call to the vet to see if this is a possibility. If the vet is concerned about it, you should bring her back in for a checkup.

Maybe your local shelter has kittens in need of a mom cat? They can nurse off her and solve the problem.
