Dear all,

Hoping someone can help.

Just found my neighbours cat in my backyard shed. cat barely moving, skin and bones, very listless, flea ridden. spoke to my vet, vet said cannot treat cat without permission of owner (microchip makes this hard to lie about) only option to call RSPCA, not willing to call RSPCA due to personal issues with neighbours. Have now wormed, deflead and washed cat (pure bred siamese - by the way - god I hate some people) over the last 12 hours have managed to get the cat to eat two beaten eggs and about 50 grams of raw meat. Does anyone have any other hints to help a cat regain condition. regards Jacinta

Take him to another vet. Any vet who didn't call the RSPCA himself upon seeing the condition of the animal shouldn't be treating pets. If a child were abused, the doctor would call social services. We must expect the same level of caring from our vets.

Other than that, if that isn't possible, the cat could have any number of illnesses or it could just be starved. If a vet won't help, there's a high calorie supplement that comes in a tube that can be bought at most pet stores here in the States. I don't know if they sell it there, but you can check. It's for animals who aren't eating all the nutrition they need. Ask the store clerk.

Here's what it is here (Nutrical). http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=5867

That might help him if he's just been starving. If he's sick, though, he needs the vet.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets or kids. Anyway, You should be able to make an anonimous complaint somehow about the neighbors neglect. Unless you can't personally hide the fact that it was you that turned them in. I think I would go to a vet that I have not seen before and present the cat as a stray I found that I am interested in rehabilitating. At least here in Buffalo, NY it tends to go over well with vets and some even try to give discounts. Plus they are generally willing to help adopt it out by giving your name to people that ask them if they know where to get a cat from other that the shelter or a pet store. Good luck! Try the nutrical that was suggested too. The stuff is a wonderfull thing! Also, if you can get your hands on some Hills Science Diet A/D, they seem to love that even if they can't hold it down!

Damn, Jacinta; too bad you are way off in Australia. We have vets here in Seattle who would help out.

Any rescuers in your area or renegade vets who would help? This cat sounds critical.

How old is the cat? By your description I am guessing that he is a grown-up. Are your neighbours not looking for their cat? Your treatment is good in my opinion. I suggest you to find thru friends a vet-one who will not treat the cat as a doctor, but as a friend. You can also try other vets, and I hope someone else will be willing to help you. Good luck, please let us know how it will develope.

Are you sure the neighbors didn't take care of their cat? Maybe she escaped and was lost outside, or got trapped somewhere. Though the fleas would make me wonder about missing care, but then again, do you know how long she's been outside?

If you're sure it's neglect, take her to another vet who'll treat her. My vet would, I'm sure there are vets in your area who will do the same.

This is pretty much animal cruelty and you would be doing a great service by reporting these neighbors despite any personal issues with the neighbors. People like your neighbors are pretty much monsters who have committed an act of animal cruelty which is a crime. You did a good deed by rescuing this cat but you must now report the case to the RSPCA who can investigate and hopefully be able to prosecute and stop your neighbors so they can no longer put another cat through the same thing.
