Adopted 1 yr old - Papers say she was pregnant

We adopted a beautiful 1 yr old black grey and white cat from a local foster house about 2 weeks ago. She is doing great and we have of course already made her a part of the family (although we are still seperating her from our Shih Tzu until they're ready to be buddies). Anyways, she was fixed and the papers said she was pregnant. She had been rescued from under a house after some moron left her and moved. My question is, are there any long term problems from a cat being pregnant this young and then getting fixed. She seems healthy and rambunctious and the papers don't indicate any other health issues. She was about 9 months when the procedure was done. Thanks.

The rescue group that I volunteer with has never encountered problems when we've done this. She sounds lovely.

We recommend spaying pregnant females at Los Angeles shelters. Otherwise the entire family is generally put to sleep. We haven't encountered any problems with the procedure. Thanks for adopting a shelter animal.

I'd say she is pretty safe if the procedure was done at 9 months. When I adopted my cat she was 5 months old when she was spayed.

Actually I was concerned about the pregnancy. How young can cats get pregnant?

I have heard that they can pregnant as young as 4 or 5 months.

The youngest that I've known a cat to get pregnant is four months. She and the kittens died. I've known of two cats who had their first litter at seven months (ie five months at conception). All the kittens died, despite one of the mothers being very attentive.

As soon as they come into heat, which can be as young as 4 months. I don't know if they can earlier than that, but I'm sure that there are rare occasions where they do.

Was it you who had her spayed? How many kittens were there? I guess she will be fine, did you take her to your vet? My neighbor had a very young female cat come to her door 6 weeks ago, looked she was dumped here in the woods, looked like she was pregnant, she was far too young to have kittens, so we took her to the vet for an abortion and spay, she had to have a 6' opening for the operation because of the kittens, also had to wear a collar for 1 week, she is fine now and was very lucky to find a good home, they have already a male neutered who also was found and they get along very very well. Guess there will be lots of cats abandoned now, kitten time!
