Here in CA it's a $1,000 fine for abandoning animals. Too bad they can't find her, get this money and use it for the kitties. Cool web cam. I can see you typing! Sorry I can't help. I live a zillion miles away and already do animal rescue so I'm full up also.

Congratulations! I'm so happy for them and you. I wasn't too hopeful because of their ages. I personally like old cats.

Well done, I hope they all get good homes. I hope their ex-owner gets everything she deserves.

I think it is terrible anyone would just up and leave her cats behind. Who knows how long they would have been without food, water and a clean litterbox. This woman should be put through the same thing. I think it is wonderful that the original poster took them temporarily and was able to coordinate a rescue. I do hope the Animal Rescue League is a no-kill shelter though. I too hope these felines get good and loving homes and are never abandoned again.

I've heard about this shelter, and have been impressed by the work they do. No, they aren't no-kill. But they don't routinely euthanize after a set amount of time, either. Most importantly, they 'never'' turn away an animal in need. From Their Website: Q: Why isn't the ARL a no-kill shelter? A: The ARL is the only shelter in the area that never turns away an animal in need. The ARL believes that it is better to humanely euthanize an animal than refuse to accept it and have it be abandoned on the street where it could be hit by a car, starve and suffer.

Restricted access shelters (no-kill shelters) often hold animals for years. Some are never adopted and live their entire lives in kennels. The ARL believes the quality of an animal's life suffers in these situations.

The ARL is working toward its future goal of a society where healthy animals are not euthanized because the pet overpopulation crisis is under control. By spaying and neutering pets, the ARL believes there will be a day when there are enough homes for every healthy pet. In the meantime, rather than turn animals away, the ARL humanely euthanizes.

I hope you reconsider bringing the cats to the Iowa shelter, and instead try to find them homes. The shelter does euthanize animals, and the odds of those cats being adopted are miniscule. However, the odds of the cats being euthanized are great. Older cats in shelters rarely get adopted, and the time they spend in the shelter is extremely stressful for them. Maybe you would have better luck if you went to your local news station and asked them to do a story on the situation. It would reach a wide audience and, especially at this time of year when people are generally more giving and wanting to help, I'm sure you would find homes for the cats. I know it may seem like a lot to handle to take on, albeit temporarily, 3 more cats with 5 dogs and 3 cats, but I walk this walk myself and currently have 24 cats. I don't think the 3 extra would be that much more trouble for a little while and you may be able to find some people to at least foster the cats until homes are found. Leaving them with the shelter is an iffy propostion at best, and the fact is that they could very well be put to sleep, which is an end result I don't think you want.
